Town Hall - 295 George Street, Stewiacke NS, B0N 2J0 | (902) 639-2231

Good morning. As we all know, Hurricane "Fiona" had a huge impact on the Town of Stewiacke in addition to the province and parts beyond. Big shout out to residents of the Town rising to the challenge and "batten down the hatches" and wait the storm out. Thankfully no word of any physical injuries although Fiona caused a lot of damage.

Now we are in the post-event phase. A comfort center will be open today (Monday) at the Stewiacke Community Centre commencing from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Thankfully our power has been mostly restored in the Town of Stewiacke but much of the surrounding area does not have power. The Stewiacke Community Centre is an ideal location for those who require power for oxygen tanks and other health-related issues instead of going to nearby hospitals.

What does a Comfort Centre provide?

Comfort Centres may provide different services depending on the resources available. However, all comfort centres are intended to provide a place to:

  • a place to get warm
  • re-charge devices
  • use washroom
  • get a warm drink
  • check on each other, and share information
  • get updates on weather and power resumption

Some centres may provide:

  • Light snacks and/or food prepared by volunteers
  • A space for community members to prepare their own food

What does a Comfort Centre NOT provide?

  • A comfort centre is NOT an overnight shelter.

And a huge shout out to the Stewiacke Fire Department and the "Meals On Wheels" group for their hard work and leadership at the comfort centre yesterday. Thank you!!!

Respectfully,

Dale A. Bogle, Chief Administrative Officer
Town of Stewiacke
